e number of deaths from cancer continues to increase each year. Cancer is a disease has touched every family at least once. It is a disease that can kill you in a matter of years or months. There are several different types of cancer, some of which both men and women can be diagnosed with and some of which only one sex can actually be diagnosed with. Today researchers are finding more and more advances into what causes cancer. I myself am a cancer survivor and my treatment at the time in 1992 was considered experimental. My older brother who is now 32 years old was diagnosed with Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, when he was 2 years old; he too was a part of a research study that he is still participating in today. The main fact taken into consideration when determining the best treat is the severity of the cancer. What stage and the type of cancer are also considered when researching the best method of treatment. A patient’s age is also a big factor in what method a patient is considered for. Chemotherapy is the most commonly used form of treatment used to fight cancer. Over half of all patients that are diagnosed with cancer receive this form of treatment. There are several different methods that this drug can be administered. It can be given by IV, oral drugs, rectally or all three can be used at the same time. Many of the chemotherapy treatments lead to hair loss during the course of the treatment (www.medicalonline.com, 1997). One other major form of treatment would be radiation therapy. Of course, there are many different types of lies; there are lies which do not tell the truth, equivocation, lies of omission, and those "white" lies which do not hurt anyone. There are also many different reasons for telling a lie. Some might lie to cover the truth, others might lie because it became a habit to them when they a child. But why would someone use equivocation? Someone might use equivocation to allow the recipient to draw their own interpretation of the matter, as a result, causing them to make a hasty decision. To picture the difference between a lie and equivocation, let us use a mask and call it "LIE". A lie would be like covering up your face with that mask, so that no one can see the truth. But equivocation is like putting on only half the mask, to show only half the truth. In the Shakespearean play that we study in grade eleven English titled Macbeth, wicked and evil witches deceive their victim, Macbeth, by equivocating his prophecies. As a result of this new "half-true" knowledge, Macbeth makes rash decisions that lead him to paranoia, grief, and his downfall. The first set of prophecies the witches reveal to Macbeth, in act 1, scene 3, was that Macbeth is to become thane of Glamis, thane of Cawdor and that he shall be king. They also said "Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none." Macbeth was shocked when the first two prophecies came true. In act 1, scene 3 he spoke of his fears, saying "unfix my hair, and make my seated heart knock at my ribs." In Elizabethan times, witches were known as creatures of the devils; satanic creatures who roam the world to cause destruction and chaos. But how can devils speak of great truths? Macbeth's new intelligence was then reported to his wife. He writes about how he will become king. But how was he going to do this? One of Macbeth's rash decisions was to murder the King. Macbeth had invited the King, and the King's men to come over to his castle to celebrate the victory of the battle that had been won. That night, when everyone was asleep, Macbeth took a dagger and killed the King. After the murder he became very paranoid. In act 2 scene 2, he shows us this, "Didst thou not hear a noise? ...There's one did laugh in's sleep, and one cried `murder!', Methought I heard a voice cry `Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep'...I am afraid to think what I have done; look on't again I dare not." Macbeth become king. He then called upon murderers as a result of his paranoia, to execute Banquo, a friend of his that knew about the prophecies. Paranoia had taken over his life so much that his wife was left out of his plans. He had become so paranoid, that his feelings had become numb, shown in act 5, scene 5, "I have almost forgot the taste of fears: The time has been, my senses would have cool'd to hear a night-shriek." Not only did his paranoia cause him grief, but also the unhappiness of his wife, Lady Macbeth who commits suicide in Act 5. Macbeth shows his remorse after he finds out the news, "To-morrow, and to-morrow and to-morrow, creeps in this petty pace from day to day, to this last syllable of recorded time...Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more...signifying nothing". Meanwhile, Macduff, travelled to England to meet Malcolm. There, they planned on joining forces to defeat Macbeth. Macbeth then meet the witches once again, and heard another set of prophecies. These new prophecies told him to beware of Macduff, that no man born of woman will harm him, and that he will not be vanquished until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane Hill. In short time, Malcolm ordered that each of his men cut off from Birnam Wood. Macbeth who has been relying on the assurance of the witches tells his men to leave the castle and attack. Pearl Sydenstricker Buck, 1892 - 1973 Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker was born on June 26, 1892, in Hillsboro, West Virginia. Her parents, Absalom and Caroline Sydenstricker, were Southern Presbyterian missionaries, and were stationed in China. Pearl was the fourth of seven children (and 1 of only 3 who would live until adulthood). Buck was born in the U.S. so she could be a natural U.S. citizen. The Sydenstrickers lived in Chinkiang (Zhenjiang), in Kiangsu (Jiangsu) province. Pearl's father spent much time away from home, traveling in the Chinese countryside in search of Christian converts. Pearl's mother ministered to Chinese women in a dispensary she created. >From childhood, Pearl spoke both English and Chinese. She was taught mainly by her mother and a Chinese tutor, Mr. Kung. Though in 1900 the family returned to the US to continue their lives. In 1910, Pearl enrolled in Randolph-Macon Woman's College, in Lynchburg, Virginia, and graduated in 1914. Though their writings show similarity in the negativity that surround these sports, their essays differ for the feelings the writers feel now. Bowling refuses to watch hockey, whereas, Zimmerman still has a passion for the sport. For Bowling the sport has been ruined by the violence, the marketing, and the ways it has changed from a sport to business. He says, â€Å" When I was a boy, the boards, ice, and score clock were free of advertising; goals and assists meant more than salaries; and players and teams had distinct character† (Bowling,215). For Bowling, he was still looking for the same sport that he watched growing up, what he sees today, he does not recognize. According to him young boys are being sexually abused by coaches, players are badly hurting others and people like Don Cherry are exploiting others for a good laugh. He sees violence everywhere in the sport now, not the good, old, pure sportsmanship he saw growing up. He also says, â€Å"Why should I follow a sport whose foundation in this country is made of blood and beer and an empty rhetoric around outdated and destructive notions of patriotism and manhood† (Bowling, 215). He loves the sport but cannot support what has become of it. Zimmerman shares the love for soccer as other Africans, he says, â€Å"my heart will break too, if Ghana fails to win the Africa Cup† (Zimmerman, 346). He wishes for the best, for both the country and the sport. He doesn’t want them to build an identity around soccer, because if they one day lose, it will break the whole nation. A high school exit exam is a test that you must pass to receive your high school diploma.These exams typically includea math section as well as an English language arts section that incorporates reading and writing skills.Some include science and social studies sections as well.Sometimes states have a series of standardized exams administered throughout high school rather than just one.These are often called â€Å"end-of-course exams† because students are required to take them upon completion of specific high school courses in various core subjects. I’ll give a quick overview of what the material is like and why an exit exam isrelatively easy to pass. For math, you’ll need to know basic algebra and geometry.Most of the questions on the math sections of these tests ask you to perform a certain operation rather than challenging you to develop your own mathematical model to solve a problem.This can vary slightly across states, but, in general, the math skills required to pass are not at the more advanced level that many students reach by the end of high school. For the reading components of these exams, the focus is on basic reading comprehension, including the understanding of main ideas, vocabulary, and details in a passage. Exit exams tend tohave very few questions that require deep analysis (which is troubling considering how important this skill is for college!).For the most part, questions test lower-level reading skills like making basic inferences and recalling information from the passages.Passages typically consist of both literary and informational texts that are written at an accessible level for the majority of high school students. In the study mentioned above, across the different states, the difficulty of reading material on exit exams was roughly equivalent to that of the material on the ACT’s assessment for 8th and 9th graders.Some of it was at the same level as the 10th grade ACT assessment, but none of the questions were on par with the material tested on the real ACT.
